... "Oh, yes", said the peasant, "they undertake a whole range of
crafts, trades and other industries. And then there's the mercenaries!"
...
From The Hrolfsaga, Circa 944 A.D.
The days of re-enactment generally being a bunch of single males fighting
and drinking have long gone; today, it is a family hobby, with a strong
emphasis on authentic crafts and skills. There is still
plenty of fighting for those that want it, and plenty of activities for
those that don’t. On the Living History site (within the Felag, now seven
tents and counting), we can muster displays of:
- Bonework
- Accurate cookery and food processing
- Woodworking by hand and by pole-lathe
- Textile processing: spinning, dyeing, weaving and braiding
- Leatherwork
- Net-making
- Period games, for all ages
There are some photos on our gallery page
if you wish to see some of members engaging in these activities.
For those who want to learn combat skills, we begin with a spear and
shield as basic equipment (available on loan from the Felag to begin
with). Once these are mastered, warriors can progress to longer spears,
and a whole range of short-arms, particularly axes and, for those wealthy
enough and of sufficient "social standing" within the society, swords.
Training sessions happen most mornings at the large events, with battles
for
the public audience in the afternoon. Combat is open to either gender,
with the proviso that, since there is no reliable record of female
combatants in Regia'’s period, women must make an attempt to disguise
as men when taking the field for public displays.
